Description This article addresses a key issue regarding the effective political participation of indigenous peoples: the right to Prior Consultation. In Ecuador, the Constitution establishes that the State must consult the communities before launching development initiatives that could directly affect them. However, this obligation has been systematically circumvented by various governments and indigenous peoples have been forced to go to international bodies for the protection of human rights to enforce their rights. Such is the case of the Kichwa people of Sarayaku. The author offers a overview of that historical struggle.
