Description This paper includes a summary of two projects with the Aguaruna people in Peru and Maya people in Mexico. Lessons are drawn about the role of culture, politics, and local governance in the different outcomes of these projects. The author discusses how indigenous governance facilitates the process of prior informed consent for the use of traditional knowledge.
